When Everyone Else Is Starting Over: Grief in the Back-to-School Season

The supply lists are out. The aisles are picked over. The mornings have a deadline again.
August is the real new year. Not January — August. This is when the calendar actually turns. New shoes, new folders, new schedules taped to the refrigerator. A haircut. An alarm set earlier than it was in July.
You don't need a kid in a classroom to feel it. It's in the light, which is going gold earlier than it did a month ago. It's in the traffic at 7:30. It's in the aisle of notebooks at Target, which somehow still smells like the first day of fourth grade. The whole culture leans forward at once.
And underneath the leaning forward is a promise: you get a clean page. Whatever last year was, this year can be different.
Some things don't reset in August.
In my work as an end-of-life doula, I hear about this stretch more than people expect. Not just the anniversaries — those announce themselves and people brace for them. This is a different ache. The everyone-else-is-starting-over ache. The world buys new folders and you are still carrying the same thing you were carrying in June.
Nobody hands you a clean page for that. And the fresh-start energy in the air can make the not-resetting feel louder.
So here's what I'd offer instead of a fresh start: begin one small thing.
Not a resolution. Nothing that requires you to become a different person by October. Something the size of a new notebook. A walk you take on Tuesdays. A book you read four pages of before bed. A standing phone call with the friend who already knows. One small thing that's yours, that starts now, that doesn't ask you to be finished with anything first.
Beginning again is not the same as moving on.
If one of those small things could be an hour in a room with people who understand, you're welcome at Grief Circle, held monthly on Zoom. It's free. There's no script and no requirement to share. Come for someone you lost last week, or someone you lost twenty years ago. Come because it's August and everyone else got a new folder. All of it belongs.
The mornings will keep getting earlier. The light will keep going gold. Somewhere in the next few weeks the whole country will settle into a rhythm it agreed on without asking you. You don't have to match it. You can start your one small thing on a Thursday in the middle of September and it will count exactly the same.
